Cycling is not as popular in Portugal as it is in Germany. In recent years, however, a trend reversal has been noticed in this area. More and more Portuguese are discovering a love for bicycles. The “poor people” means of transport becomes a sport and leisure time pleasure. Even in hilly Lisbon, more and more locals are cycling. Bicycle paths and the entire network of cycle paths are continuously being expanded and improved.
In my opinion, the country and people in Portugal can be easily explored by bike. There are nice off-road tours that are nice to drive, especially in spring. Even back roads in less densely populated areas are usually easy to ride with a robust bike or mountain bike.
However, I recommend better avoiding cycling on main roads, unless these have a wide hard shoulder.
